Facebook-friendships – and onion chutney!

onions
Use your onions to make a great onion chutney.

If I ever win the national lottery, I am going to write a book. No, not “How to win the National Lotty” (though that might make me even richer!), but a book about the women, I have made friends with through Facebook, but whom I have never met.

Of course I know, that Facebook-friendships are nothing like the real deal, and that nothing beats the friend, you’ve had since 2nd grade. But these Facebookfriendships – they ain’t half bad.

Dont ask me how we met. I can hardly remember, but I think that I “met” most of them five years ago via an app called “Send good karma”. I guess, I have about 20 female and three male FB-friends, that I found that way. Some of them, I have “talked” (written) more to than others, but I would not like to loose any of them.

The ones I know the best are the girls in The Circle (women, who got together in a private group to discuss life, differences and similarities in our countries) – Diane in France, Angela in England, Carol in Scotland, Anne in South Africa, another Anne in USA and Paulette in Canada. Apart from them there are Tas in England, Lalay at the Philiphines, Charmaine in South Africa, and – not a woman! – Ed in New York. There are more, that I haven’t mentioned. And now you think; why should I know about this?

Well, because one of my FB-friends is Pippi. She lives in Idaho, and sometimes I think, that all she does is grow fabulous vegetables and cook. Ofcourse that is not the case. Actually she a jewellery-maker, a true artist. But what interests me the most is her cooking. She is always at it, and she is so skilled. You should see her pies!

As a matter of fact it is almost a pity, that the first Pippi-recipe, I post here, is not one of her own. Cause that is quite rare. But she posted this wonderful photo of loads of onions and wrote, that she was making a chutney. I asked for the recipe and she told me, that it was from a site on the internet called Zlamushka’s Spicy Kitchen.

As a lot of people, who grow onions in abundance, would like new recipes, I hereby give you the:

Onion Chutney

(makes 1-2 cups)

2 tablespoons oil
2 teaspoons cumin seeds 1 teaspoon mustard seeds 4 dried chilies (crushed)
6 cups onions (sliced)
2 teaspoons chili powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup lemon juice (or white vinegar)
1/4 cup sugar

1. Heat the oil in a pan.
2. Add the cumin, mustard seeds, dried chilies and heat until they sputter.
3. Add the onions and saute until the start to turn golden brown.
4. Add the chili powder, salt, lemon juice, and sugar and bring to a boil for a minute.

I hope Pippi forgives me for this; I have nicked the Photo from her Facebook-profile in order to show you how incredible skilled she is!
